Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility Water Master Plan Updates

Water Master Plan (WMP) – Project Description

Planning identifies opportunities and helps in setting priorities, with the goal of keeping the AWWU water system clearly reliable.

This 2025 update to the AWWU WMP utilizes U.S. Census data, projections from the State of Alaska, and other economic data, as well as AWWU’s organizational objectives, to create a road map for the next 20 years.

Background

AWWU provides water service to approximately 55,000 customers within the MOA, representing more than 220,000 Anchorage residents. AWWU’s water system includes water treatment plants at Eklutna Lake and Ship Creek, 12 wells, more than 850 miles of water distribution pipes, more than 5,800 fire hydrants, and 20 reservoirs and clearwells that store more than 70 million gallons of water.

Periodically, AWWU reviews its water distribution system based on current and projected population, trends in water use, and condition of the distribution infrastructure.

In the past, AWWU’s master plans focused on a growing and developing MOA. Today, the Utility is focusing on maintaining a mature, reliable transmission system.

Project Area

The AWWU WMP covers the entire AWWU service area, which is certified by the Regulatory Commission of Alaska and includes three distinct geographic regions within the Municipality of Anchorage: the Anchorage Bowl, the northern communities, and Girdwood.
